Visual Merchandising

In the course, Visual Presentation and Promotions, we learned about store displays and branding. As part of the course, we focused a lot on the visual merchandising aspect of the fashion industry. Below are two window displays that I and a team of classmates put together as part of the group assignments we had throughout the semester.

The first display we did was a small window display to promote The Textiles and Clothing Museum located on campus. We talked with one of the lecturers that work with the museum and she lent us the dress. We agreed to promote the upcoming exhibit called "Cocktails and Canapés." This exhibit included items ranging from the 1940s through to 1960s. Within the display, there are authentic items from each of these three decades. Many of the items were found at an antique store in Omaha, Nebraska.

Prints: Life Magazines printed from March 1, 1954, and January 12, 1968. The cover of The Saturday Evening Post from November 1961. Carnation Milk advertisement. Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper from July 4, 1964.

Books: Lost in the Horse Latitudes, 1944. Winnie the Pooh, 1968 (Latin Print), Walt Disney's Annette: The Desert Inn Mystery, 1961. Captain Kangaroo: Stories to Read Aloud, 1958. The Shook-Up Generation, 1968.

Miscellaneous Prints: Saint Patrick School, Council Bluffs, Iowa report card, 1955-1956. Esquire Pocket Calendar 1948. South Korea won, 1950. Japanese Ten Sen Military Currency, 1945.

The second display we did was a large window display for a fashion brand. We chose Kate Spade for our brand, seeing as a few of the members had numerous items from the company. We wanted to incorporate the stripes and floral combination that the brand is well known for, as well as the color pink. We initially were going to make the flowers out of either colored construction paper or tissue paper, but then we found these foam flowers that are meant to hang on the wall and found that they were just what we were looking for. All of the handbags are from the members of our team's personal collection.
